Propane Fire Training

Emergency Services Training Centre
ESTC has 10 propane staged fire emergency areas, including a 10,500USG transport prop. Fires are both liquid and vapour. Fees for this area include use of the on-site classroom, and vary depending on training being conducted.

Propane Emergencies 3rd edition
National Propane Gas Association and Propane Education & Research Council

Propane Emergencies is a comprehensive textbook which is part of a coordinated training program for emergency responders from both public safety agencies and the propane industry.

This book is about how to safely respond to propane emergencies. Propane is a flammable gas that is sometimes generically referred to as LP-Gas, LPG, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas. These terms are often used interchangeably and, while it is true that they have similar fire hazards, propane is only one of several constituent gases that make up Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Propane is the LP-Gas most frequently encountered by emergency responders and can be found in a wide variety of industrial, commercial, and consumer settings.

Transport Canada and is Emergency Response Guidebook
The Emergency Response Guidebook 2008 is primarily a guide to aid first responders in quickly identifying the specific or generic hazards of the material(s) involved in the incident, and protecting themselves and the general public during the initial response phase of the incident.

PTI 911-01
This course was developed specifically for Canadian firefighters and provides key information related to Liquefied Petroleum Gases (LPGs) that will enhance the risk assessment process related to incidents involving propane and other LPGs. Firefighters taking this course will develop a consistent approach to LPG-related incidents leading to enhanced public safety, minimizing the risk of personal industry to the public or the firefighters and propane industry personnel involved in these incidents. Training is available through the Propane Gas Association of Canada’s Propane Training Institute.

Emergency Film Group
This program, Propane, Butane & Propylene is part of the HazChem Series. It is available separately or as a part of the series. Propane, butane and propylene are the most common liquefied petroleum gases. Highly flammable, their containers can fail with explosive force. This program covers:

  • How to determine fire protection needs for LPG facilities
  • Avoiding BLEVEs
  • Strategy for handling fires
  • Determining water flow to cool tanks exposed to fire

US Chemical Safety Board
The US Chemical Safety Board web site includes a short video, Half an Hour to Tragedy, highlighting the training needs for propane emergencies.
